The
Dopie Dope
story began with a simple four line poem in my first book.
The bullfrog and the grasshopper...and other "tails".
My neighbor's name is Dopie Dope.
He washes, never using soap.
I wish he would, and give me hope
For my neighbor, Dopie Dope!

Karol's illustration
provided an identity most children can easily relate to. By
the end of the first year of school visits, Dopie was the
most popular poem in the book. Dopie made an appearance in
the following two books... "Can't
Reach the Itch" and "
Two Pigs
In Wigs". He became the character most students ask
about at the presentations. The students were loving Dopie.
He was their buddy. Demand for a Dopie book was coming from
students, teachers and parents.
We have now published two rhyming story books, "Dopie
Dope goes to the Fair" and "Trouble
on the Farm For Dopie Dope". Dopie has evolved into a
character who never seems to do anything right but continues
to try. He never gives up which is a lesson within itself.
All children have the need for self expression and must
develop the skills that will enable them to express
themselves in a positive way. It can be done through writing
simple poems, the arts, music or sports. The message I
provide with Dopie and my presentations is... not everyone
will be a fast reader or a straight "A" student. I wasn't...
and I went on to write five books. Writing is my way to
express myself to the world.. it is what I love to do. I
consider myself a success and believe the only true measure
of success is to be the best you can be and never say "I
Can't". I give students an easy method to create simple
poems for themselves in the hope of building confidence that
will motivate them to enjoy reading and writing more.
Using her artistic talent, Karol designed and produced a
cloth Dopie doll. The doll has become a very popular part of
my school presentations and educational conferences.
Interest in the doll has been widespread among students,
teachers and the general public. Plans for production and
marketing the Dopie doll are ongoing at this time. We also
produce Dopie T-shirts and baseball caps for the general
public and school related fund raisers. Other Dopie products
are being planned and will be forthcoming.
